On-line data storage, review and retrieval tool makes it easier for clients to store, view and manage geophysical data

Your gravity and magnetic data sets are expensive assets

They can represent the largest single cost element in interpretation. Next to seismic surveys, these data sets may even be the largest external budget item prior to drilling.

They are also an important resource. They may be needed for additional drilling decisions after exploratory wells. They may be needed for other projects in the same area. They may provide intelligence about how to interpret other structures in the region.

Ongoing data value is strongly dependent on storage methods

In the worst-case scenario, imagine these files simply being saved to a directory somewhere on an individual geophysicist’s computer. Time passes. People move on. And then there’s a new project in the same area and you need data. Will anyone know what data you already own? Will they know where it is? Data sets are easy to lose track of, especially when you have a lot of projects. Searching for data files can be a very time-consuming activity.

Locating the data is only part of the concern. To identify what is useful, you need to know the provenance, the area coverage and quality of the data. It is important to be able find that information quickly and easily. That requires some kind of indexing and retrieval method.

Maintaining the quality of information in the data sets

During interpretation, data sets are conditioned to increase the quality of the information they provide. The data may also be manipulated to provide higher-level information. Often these data are also visualized to make it more comprehensible. All of this interpretive work represents significant added value to the data. Saving only the raw observed data abandons that value.

Visualization is important to identifying and evaluating data sets

Visualization is an enormous help in understanding what interpreted abstract data represents. Similarly, mapping is a very easy way to understand the coverage area of a survey. Incorporating this kind of information into an indexing system makes it much easier to retrieve and review data sets.

Secure your data, maintain its integrity, with VIDL online access

All your data is maintained on a dedicated server and is regularly backed up. Files require a user ID and password for access. The number of security gates is client-dependent.

Data Integrity is a lot more than storage

Other companies offer offsite data storage. We provide a complete data preparation and data assessment service. Before your data sets are entered into your VIDL library, IGC personnel organize and qualify the data. This may include:

  • extracting data from vintage formats
  • data reduction
  • preparing information on the quality of the data
  • identifying what mathematical filters were applied
  • conversion to client-preferred format
  • creation of projections or views

Only when the data is properly conditioned is it entered into the database.
